Oct. 95 FOOTAGE purportedly show- ing unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in formation was aired on an evening prime time tele- vision newscast on Monday that riveted viewers across South Korea. The film, allegedly taken on September 4 by a local cable television cameraman north of Seoul, showed a clear image of white, luminous saucer-shaped objects flying in formation against a blue sky: The footage, aired for four minutes and 44 seconds; showed a big brilliant cluster. comprising 10 small saucers that flew in parallel, in a verti- cal formation.. "The flying objects were àc- cidentally taken by my TV camera while I was on a trip to -scout out locations," Lee Hee Hong, 33, a cameraman for Kangwon Cable News, said in a televised interview shown with his film. Kang said he had been reluc tant to publicise the film for fear of ridicule. MBC television said it was the first UFO film footage tak- en in South Korea and shown unedited. Kang said the UFO film was taken in Kapyong, some 50 ki- lometres northeast of Seoul, the same place where a news- paper photographer allegedly took a picture of what UFO experts described as a typical flying saucer on September 3. That photograph, taken by Kim Sun-Kyu of the Seoul newspaper Munhwa Ilbo, was selected as one of the nation's best five news pictures for Sep- tember by an association of South Korean photographers. In the first week of Septem- ber, UFOs were witnessed by many people in the area, news- papers said, although scien- tists remained sceptical about the alleged sightings.
